Create Your Own LTC Plan

Beginning the Long-Term Planning Process

I’ve found a good approach to the development of a long-term care plan is to think of it as a series of talking points. Making the process as non-threatening and informal as possible tends to encourage honest and open discussion. Participants may include family members, a husband and wife, or just yourself. Regardless who is included, it is important to place your thoughts, preferences and/or decisions in writing, which then can be reviewed periodically, because as times change, needs may change also.

Keep in mind you are not doing this endeavor because you expect to need care; instead, you are thinking about the consequences to those you love if you ever did. Do the best to answer the questions; however, if there are some which you are not able to respond to, save them for later time, or just skip. Whatever progress you make with the plan is a great step to lighten the challenges for loved ones if you ever did need care.

Some Questions to consider:

  • Are your legal matters in place and up-to-date?
  • Will you want to live alone?
  • What will you do if unable to live alone?
  • How involved can (will) your family members be in your long term care?
  • How will you pay for your extended healthcare (Long Term Care)?

There are no right or wrong answers to these and dozens of other questions, but these are questions that need to be answered for your own, and your family's peace of mind. Don Olson has two ways to help you:
